Inextricably Linked: The Environment and Our Health

A special Earth Week note.

A woman walking outside in nature.

When we think about our health, it can be easy to become fixated on numbers, labs, and charts… but sometimes we forget to look out the window. Our environment plays a massive, often invisible role in our daily (and longterm) well-being.

Earth Day was yesterday and it got me thinking about how connected we truly are to our surroundings. Here are just a few examples that come to mind:

  • Pollution: Fine particulate matter from traffic and industrial smog can penetrate deep into our lungs and even cross into our bloodstream, driving up the risk of cardiovascular disease. Clean air is a fundamental pillar of long-term heart and vascular health.

  • Asthma: Our lungs are on the front lines of environmental exposure. Airborne irritants like pollen, mold, wildfire smoke, and (yes!) pollution trigger airway inflammation and can lead to asthma flare-ups. Keeping a close eye on local air quality indexes can help you plan your outdoor activities and breathe a little easier.

  • Barometric pressure: Shifts in atmospheric pressure, often preceding a storm, can cause tissues in the body to expand and contract, leading to joint pain or sinus pressure. For many people, these weather shifts are a very real trigger for chronic pain or migraines.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: Emerging research suggests that environmental toxins, like endocrine disruptors found in plastics and pollutants, can interfere with hormone regulation and exacerbate PCOS symptoms. Reducing exposure to these chemicals is a key part of managing both metabolic and reproductive health.

  • The healing power of the outdoors: On a brighter note, spending time outside is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. Time in nature is scientifically proven to lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure, improve immunity, and boost your mood.

Of course, I would never write a note like this without empowering you with solutions. We can’t always change the environment we’re in, of course, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless to take control of our wellness. There are six basics I always go back to when being healthy feels complicated or overwhelming. Because while our bodies (and the world!) are amazing and complex, wellness doesn’t have to be
