It’s time to say goodbye to Benadryl

Allergy season is in full swing here in the Pacific Northwest and it felt like a great time to talk about one of my current favorite topics: Benadryl. For most of us, it’s time to say goodbye to this first generation antihistamine.

Often used to treat allergies and allergic reactions, Benadryl has some serious and unwanted side effects like sedation (but not better quality sleep), confusion, and dry mouth. Some studies have suggested that repeated use of medications like Benadryl can contribute to an increased risk in developing dementia (more studies are needed on this one). Fun fact: Benadryl is often the active ingredient in medications like ZZZquil.

Zyrtec, a second generation antihistamine, acts as quickly as Benadryl when used for mild to moderate allergic reactions with much less side effects. The effects of Zyrtec last longer than Benadryl, making it great for both allergic reactions and run of the mill allergy symptoms like itching, runny nose, and sneezing. It’s been the medication most studied in head to head studies with Benadryl and so it’s the medication I’m mentioning as an alternative.

Of course, this is not medical advice and is meant for general educational/entertainment purposes. Please always consult with your own provider before taking or changing any medications and call 911 if you have an emergency.

I hope you are having a happy and healthy allergy season!
